To
260 Km to the Northwest of Tahiti, in the Islands Under-The-Wind, rise Bora
Bora. The main island, home of more than 6000 inhabitants are surrounded with a
multicolored lagoon and small islets named "motu", protected by a coral gate.
Only one navigable pass faces the main village: Vaitape. A circular road of 29
km, partially tarred, takes the turn of the island while passing by small
animate villages, of the archaeological sites, of former "blockhaus" of the US
army and a big cannon let there since the second world war, at the time of the
"pacific" occupation of the island by 5000 American soldiers (Bora Bora was a
strategic basis).
The Matira head is known for its marvelous beach of white sand and its tepid,
transparent and little deep waters. The lagoon of Bora Bora is famous to be one
of the most beautiful of the world. Bora Bora deserves its legend well: often
baptized the "Pearl of the Pacific",
The Otemanu mount dominates, of all its height (727 m), the beauty of its fishy
waters, of its motus to the coconut palm plantation swept by winds, of its
"white sand" beaches, and of its gardens of corals. In June/July, fabulous
feasts are organized, then, Bora Bora, becomes an island of feasts, dances,
music and continuous entertainment!
The feast of THE
FISHING TO THE STONES is an unique event:
It takes place, in the island of Bora Bora (every 3 years about), and in other
neighboring islands and attract several thousands of visitors of the outside and
the inside of the French Polynesia. Clothed of pareos and crowns of ferns, the
fishers get up to the prow of their dugouts decorated and fold back fish in
direction of a long open net sustained by a long human chain of villagers and
spectators. For that, they hit the surface of water with stones attached at the
end of a long rope. Once the "heading off" is finished, they close again the net
and reduce its surface progressively, while bringing it toward the beach. Fish
took to the trap meet heaped finally on the coral beach where they will be
prepared for the big feast of in the evening. This celebration is marked by
dances, of the folksongs, of the exhibitions of arts and handicraft as well as
the shoppings of dugouts to pendulum. The ceremony of fishing to the stones is
celebrated at the end with an enormous tahitian feast (pitch believed heated to
the suppressed), with dances and a ceremony of discount of price.
Paul-Emile Victor lived a certain time there, on a motu (that he had bought)
near one of the airport. Its son Teva Victor comes regularly on Bora Bora.
This small island of hardly 40 Km² of surface (islets coralline understood), its
archaeological sites, its old cannon, its multiple activities, its immense
lagoon of turquoise waters, its familiar sharks and its stripes manta in jaunt
make of Bora Bora a ... islet of dream...,... a small corner of paradise...
(that is necessary to be protected).
